1968 edition of Scientific American, a popular scientific magazine described a game by C. L. Baker similar to Freecell. Only differece was in that game Tableau cells are built by Suit while in Freecell it is Alternate Colors. That game is now called Baker's Game.

Paul Alfille later changed the tablau arranging order of Baker's Game to Alternate Color making Freecell. He also created a computerized version of it for PLATO educational computer systems.

Freecell gained worldwide popularity after Jim Horne created a graphical version of it for Windows. Microsoft first introducted it with Win 32 test platform and made it as a part of all future OS releases like 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP.

Now Freecell is available for many different platforms like Mac OS, Palm OS, Linux etc. They also equally popular like their Windows versions. There are many online Freecell game sites also available today. MSN and Yahoo Games online sites aslo providing options to play freecell freely on the web.

There are many shareware and freeware Freecell game packages are in the market today for Windows, Macintosh and Palm. New Freecell implemetations are coming up every day for PC, Mac, PDA and Mobile devices.

Day by day freecell's popularity is increasing. Latest Freecell packages are with many features like unlimited undo, redo, save game etc.
